Turrón - Spanish Almond Candy for Christmas

Thursday December 6, 2007

Varieties of Turron

In Spain, what's the most beloved Christmas candy? Turrón!

It is a very traditional candy made of almonds that cannot be missing from a Spanish Christmas celebration. The two original styles of turrón are Jijona or blando meaning soft, which has the consistency of peanut butter, and Alicante or turrón duro which is a hard nougat candy with whole almonds mixed throughout. In the last few years, dozens of varieties and flavors have popped up, including many chocolate versions. To tell the truth, we've never tasted a turron we didn't like!

Fortunately, because of its popularity, turrón is now available around the world. You can purchase it from ethnic food stores, national import stores, gourmet food stores, mail order catalogs and web sites. Because there are different qualities of turrón, we recommend that you learn about them before you go out shopping for it.
