Cava and Turron

New Year's Eve is called Noche Vieja in Spain and it's a big night for parties, bar-hopping, dancing and fireworks! Many bottles of Spanish cava, Spanish sparkling wine are drunk accompanied by lots of tapas and sweets like turron.

At midnight, the Spanish continue the ritual of eating a dozen grapes, one for each toll of the bell. Preparation of the grapes starts while they are ripening on the vine during the summer. Small paper bags are placed around each bunch of grapes. When they're ripe, the bunch is harvested with the bag for convenience. Be sure to buy your grapes now before the grocery stores run out! About's Guide to Spain has a recipe for Spanish New Year and answers the question What is New Year's Eve Like in Spain?
