Gachas are a simple dish, made from toasted flour, oil and milk. Depending on the region of Spain, they might be prepared with meat and broth, rather than with sugar and cinnamon. This step-by-step recipe is for the dessert version with anise seeds and is absolutely sweet and delicious - and quick, too!

Ingredients

  • 4 thin slices baguette
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil, such as corn or canola
  • 1/2 cup unbleached white flour
  • 1/2 tsp anise seeds
  • 1 1/2 cups milk (whole or 2 %)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • cinnamon and sugar to sprinkle on top
  • 3/4 cup milk to serve with “gachas”
