Vinos de Castilla - Wines of Castilla

Rueda, Ribera del Duero, Toro, El Bierzo and Cigales

Rueda, Ribera del Duero, Toro, El Bierzo and Cigales are the Denominaciones de Origen (D.O.) in this region. This area is known for the reds and roses it produces, from 11 to 17 degrees. Some of the wines in the region have gained international acclaim.

Ribera del Duero

The Ribera del Duero wines are probably the best known of the five denominations in this region. They have earned a very good international reputation, due in part to the very first brands, that in the early 1980's, supported the area. Today Ribera del Duero is a region that produces excellent red and rosé or blush wines. Currently, there are more than 170 wineries which now make up the Denomination.

The Geography

This region is in the north of Spain and actually covers four different provinces - Burgos, Valladolid, Soria and Segovia, however most of the area belongs to Burgos. The Duero Valley itself is located approximately 2,800 feet above sea level, with temperatures during the summer months that reach 104ºF during the day and drop substantially overnight. These extreme conditions allow for only one season of growth per year, but because of the grape variety Tempranillo La Riojano, which adapts to these conditions, the area wineries are able to produce fruity, full-bodied, colorful wines.

The Aging Process

The aging process here takes place in barrels from Bourdeaux in underground cellars. Most of the wine production in this area is on a relatively small scale. Therefore, wines from this area can be pricey.

Wineries

Probably the best-known Ribera del Duero winery here in the USA is Tinto Pesquera, (its long name is "Alejandro Fernandez Tinto Pesquera") which can be purchased at wine stores and large beverage chain stores.
